Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:13 KJV

To all those soldiers who have given their lives for our freedom,
we take this time to remember them today.

To ALL those...

Maybe You Should Just Swallow a Glowstick

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, he carried the two stone tablets of the Agreement. Because he had talked with the Lord, his face was shining, but he did not know it.  Exodus 34:29
Moses was glowing.  He had been with God.

When you spend time with God, what do other people see?  When you do NOT spend time with God, what do other people see.

The scripture says that Moses didn't know that he was glowing.  If he was not aware that he was shining, then it's safe to say that he would not know if he was NOT shining.

Spending time with God is important. Well, duh.  No, really. It's important, not just for us, not just for God.  It's important for others.

Sometimes I will be in the supermarket and I will see a person and I just know that they have been with God.

God is attractive.  If you want to draw people closer to God*, then spend more time in His Presence.  It will make you more attractive.  I strive to spend time with God.  I thoroughly enjoy His Presence.  My wife spends time with God.  People enjoy being around us (I think) - not because we are such great company, but because of His Presence.

Get a face lift today.  Get in His Presence.

Or just swallow a glowstick.

*all believers should have a desire to draw people closer to God.

Feeling Cloudy?

Then the cloud covered the Meeting Tent and the Glory of the LORD filled the Holy Tent. Moses could not go into the Meeting Tent because the cloud had settled on it, and the Glory of the LORD had filled the Holy Tent. When the cloud rose from the Holy Tent, the Israelites would begin to travel. But when the cloud stayed on the Holy Tent, the people did not try to move. They stayed in that place until the cloud rose. So the cloud of the LORD was over the Holy Tent during the day, and at night there was a fire in the cloud. So all the Israelites could see the cloud while they traveled.
Exodus 40:34-38 ERV

Low lying clouds are classified as fog.  Fog hinders sight.

When the cloud had settled on the Tent of Meeting, the Israelites did not travel.  They stayed put.  When the cloud lifted, that's when they moved.

If things are not clear to you considering where God wants you to move, it may be that He just wants you to be still for a while.  Why keep trying to move on if God himself is being still.  It is when He rested on the Tent of Meeting that His Presence was there.

Stay put, right where you are, and enjoy His Presence while you are waiting for Him to make His next move.

"...at night, there was a fire in the cloud."

It is in that darkest moment that, in His Presence, you will experience the Fire of God.  Thank God for the dark times when He allows us to just be in His Presence and He will give us sight and vision.

Feelings - Part Two

So, as I was considering the young lady's testimony mixed in with the 70's song playing in my head, I got to thinking.

The lyrics start:

"Feelings. Nothing more than feelings."

And then it pretty much goes downhill from there as you saw in the last post.

And then I thought about God.

I hear a lot of times that the Holy Spirit is not just a feeling.  That's true. He is NOT "Feelings. Nothing more than feelings."  He is actually "Feelings. So much more than feelings."  But he IS feelings.

Believers can be so unsure sometimes about the Will for God for their lives.  We think that since He is God, then He must have some sure-fire way to lead us, right?  It must be so much more than a feeling, no?

Not much.

If you adhere to the Word of God and get it in you to the degree that you can recognize when something does not line up with it, then all you need is the "feeling".  We have dressed it up, don't ya know?

"God placed it on my heart."

"I sensed a leading."

"In my spirit, I..."

"I just believe that..."

Those are all talking about feelings.

The Holy Spirit made you feel a certain way when you received Christ.  And then you moved.

That is how He communicates with believers.

How is it that we can figure this out and translate it to a feeling:

or this

We do it without any thought at all.

But when it comes to communicating with God, we lose it?

Trust God.

"Feelings" Part One

In the late 70's, there was a great TV show called The Gong Show.  Ordinary people would come and perform on stage for celebrity judges.  If they were bad, they were 'gonged' and asked to leave the stage. If they were good, there were awarded points and the performer with the highest score won a trophy and a check for $516.32.

It was usual that each show would carry a variety of talent.  One episode, however, had every contestant performing the same song.  It went right along with the usual slapstick humor of the program.

I was jolted to a sudden memory of this episode during a recent devotional time.  I had seen a young lady on TV who was giving her testimony of her experience with depression and self-injury.  Sometimes a song on the radio or a television program will set something alight in me; causing me to go off and seek God in that thing.  This was one of them.

In the telling of her story; the sharing of her hurts and victories, she said something.  She said she was causing other people a lot of pain.  She would be kind one moment and then a jerk the next minute. She couldn't understand why she was acting like that towards people.  So she felt that she deserved to feel some sort of pain that she was causing other people.  Then the facilitator said this: You get to the point in your life when dealing with anxiety, depression, confidence, fill-in-the-blank, where you just have to feel something.

Part Two tomorrow.

A New Series

There are several series of posts here on the blog.  They are:

2e - Scripture passage posts (sharper than a double edged (2e) sword)

Friday Fix (aka Friday Firsts) - posts about something we miss from wherever we are not and things we have tried or done or seen for the first time.

Sunday Breakfast Links - links to friends blogs or interesting items on the web.

Throwback Thursdays - Teachings or re-posts from the past that are still relevant - from our blog or someone else's

Tuesday Teachings - Teachings from the Word of God

Weekend Worship - Music and Videos posted to usher us into His Presence for worship.

I will be adding another series called "The Word to the World".  In blogging on matters concerning God and the Christian faith as they pertain to our own lives, I have been careful to not blog on political matters, although they interest me greatly.  Political blogs inherently draw a lot of argument and strife.  I'm not interested in that.  As believers however, we are to be God's voice to this dying world in all matters.  Although my own opinions are many, I am going to refrain from posting them.  I will utilize God's Word to speak to the current political atmosphere.

Let's start by saying that I believe the Word of God is exactly that - His Word to man.  I am not ever going to debate it.  I believed it by faith and He has proven it to me by experience.  He speaks to every situation through His Word.  It is that Word that I will be presenting in each post - His Word, speaking to the World's situations.

I feel, that in a very important election year, two things must happen: God must be heard on the issues and God's people must vote.

Comments on this blog are moderated, so if you want your comment posted, please be respectful.  It helps if you agree with me on every point too. :-)

So stay tuned for "The Word to the World (WTTW)", coming soon!

Your Past is Exactly That.

Then the man said to Jacob, "Let me go. The sun is coming up." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go. You must bless me." And the man said to him, "What is your name?" And Jacob said, "My name is Jacob." Then the man said, "Your name will not be Jacob. Your name will now be Israel. I give you this name because you have fought with God and with men, and you have won."

Genesis 32:26-28 ERV

Jacob dissed everyone.

He disrespected his Father.  He disrespected his brother.  He will disrespect his sons.

I can imagine his face, as his 10 sons come with Joseph's bloody coat.  Is this my harvest?  Is this what I have earned in my life. Well, yes.  But Jacob was a good wrestler.  He knew how to fight - and win.

The man that he fights with says to him that he has fought with God and men.  Well, where was that Bible story?  Did I miss something?  Did I stay home from church that day?

But I see do see where Jacob wrestled with man.  He wrestled himself.

Sometimes in order to receive the blessing that God has waiting for us on the other side of the river, we need to wrestle ourselves out of ourselves.  Sometimes we need to wrestle ourselves into forgiveness, into deliverance, into repentance.

Jacob stayed back for a reason, and it wasn't just because he wasn't sure as to how Esau would receive him.  Jacob stayed back to wrestle through some stuff; mainly, his past.

Are you wrestling with yourself?

Are you wrestling with God?

Stay in the fight!

He will change your name and assign your destiny.

Kenbe Fem

The people saw that a long time had passed and Moses had not come down from the mountain. So they gathered around Aaron. They said to him, "Look, Moses led us out of the land of Egypt, but we don't know what has happened to him. So make us some gods to go before us and lead us."
Exodus 32:1 ERV

The Haitians say "Kenbe fem": "hold on" or "stand firm".

Too bad Aaron wasn't Haitian.

It seems that the enemy knows when we are at our most vulnerable - our weakest.  He always strikes at the right (wrong) time.

As long as everything is going well; all the bills are paid on time, our health is great, our children are doing well in school and in life, then the trials of life don't bother us so much.  At those times, we are not indecisive.  At those times, we don't doubt ourselves OR God.  At those times, we float along in bliss.

As soon as it seems that God is taking His time; here comes the tempter.  A sure-fire money maker, a little help from my friends (that will cost me later!), some new health secret advertised on late night TV that ONLY costs $99.99!  It's in the rough times that doubt and fear rear their ugly heads.  That's when, for sure, we start believing, like the Israelites, that we need to take matters into our own hands.

But if when we are not in the glorious dance on the free side of the Red Sea, we could just Kenbe Fem, God would show us that He was still there the whole time - working on our behalf on the mountaintop, while we were in the valley below.

Are things not going as planned?  Does it seem as though you are moving without the unction of God?  Are things less exciting than when you started the journey?

Kenbe Fem! - to Him.
