Repentance - Part One

Hebrews 6:1 - 2Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

Repentance from dead works and faith in God are two foundational issues in the life of a believer.

Repentance is the first step. It must be taken in order to even enter into a true relationship with God. It is taken in faith. Faith is the substance of the christian's whole life and walk.

Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent.

God commands us to repent. If we don't repent, then we are in sin. Then we have to repent! :-) There is no choice or option given here. We do not have the luxury of choosing NOT to repent. It is a command. We do not have any options to repenting.

We can't just go make God some brownies instead.

That's not repentance, that's making brownies.

Confession is not repenting, it's confession.

Being, or saying you're sorry is not repentance. It is being or saying you're sorry.

Repentance and faith are gifts from God the Father to us - we turn from our ways to follow Him.

Both repentance and faith go beyond our initial experience of salvation and work actively throughout our walk of sanctification.

What does 'repent' mean?

From Webster's Dictionary:REPENT', v.i. [L. re and paeniteo, from paena, pain. Gr. See Paint.]1. To change the mind in consequence of the inconvenience or injury done by past conduct.2. In theology, to sorrow or be pained for sin, as a violation of God's holy law, a dishonor to his character and government, and the foulest ingratitude to a Being of infinite benevolence.

There is an implication of conscious moral separation from God; a personal decision to forsake sin and enter fellowship with God.

It is a conscious decision to make a 180 degree turn and go the other way, forsaking all that we thought was good and right in our own way and choosing to go a different way.

Repent. The Kingdom of God is at hand.

Here's a re-introduction of our recurring '2e' topic.

'2e' stands for '2 edges'.

The Bible says that the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

So, the 2e posts found here periodically will be scripture verses or passages that you can memorize or apply to your day.  We hope you enjoy them.

For today's 2e, we'll stick with the verse above:

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

The Power to...

Phillipians 3:10 - 15

That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

When I was little, I remember seeing the super-heros and the like, wishing that I could be like them with their powers. If only I could fly, walk through walls, have x-ray vision, super-human strength. If only there was some greatness that set me apart. If only I could be recognized for that greatness. If only I was feared!

That was one extreme of the little boy's dreams. The other extreme was what I knew to be 'true'. I never would amount to any of that. I never would be able to fly. I never would be able to walk through walls, etc. I never would be admired for any of those things and certainly NEVER feared. In fact, according to some people, I never would amount to much of anything. Some would say I was useless; powerless and worthless.

Then came Jesus.

Acts 1:8
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

So now, I have this power. Only to use it.

The power to heal the sick; see the lame walk; open deaf ears; call forth wealth; open blind eyes and raise the dead.

The power to actually BE victorious

I don't need to fly or walk through walls; I can go places in the Spirit.

I don't need to have x-ray vision; I can see in the Spirit.

Super-Human strength is unneccessary when you have Holy Ghost Power

Now there IS a power that sets me apart from the world.

Now, I am recognized ~ by God.

Now, I am feared! - By the devil.

Thank God for His wonderful plan to empower His children with His Spirit.

Now, let's use that same Power to proclaim good news to the poor, liberty to the captives recovering of sight to the blind, and to set at liberty those who are oppressed.
