The Wages are Paid in Full

I made a statement once.

Many churches teach that sickness and disease come as a result of sin.
They do not.
Jesus carried it all on the cross.
For everyone.
It is finished.
This statement, which I sincerely thought to be a simple one, raised several questions.

So I thought it prudent to elaborate on my statement.

Many churches teach that sickness and disease come as a result of sin.

Many churches and ministries teach such things as:

  • If you speak against the leader(s), you will get sick, or conversely, because you spoke against me, you got such-and-such a disease.
  • You are dealing with sickness and disease because you are cheating on your wife.
  • You are not well because you keep doing this and that (sinful thing).
If you have never encountered such a ministry or this teaching, consider yourself very fortunate, because it exists and it is a form of slavery to legalism. This is not the heart of God at all. Nor is it true.

Jesus carried it all on the cross.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:5-7
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin.
"Has been set free from sin."  And then also, free from the wages of sin. Sickness, being a degree of death can not be because of sin in a person's life. Because then the Word would not be true.

Everything. For everyone. Everywhere. It is finished.

This is true of the good news. It is indeed for everyone, everywhere and included every sin and every punishment. If that is disputed, then the gospel is a lie as a whole. No truer words were spoken than "It is finished".

And that was my simple statement. Jesus paid it all for everyone. And no sickness comes as a result of one's sin.

Also Worthy to Note

Romans 5:17
For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Illness and disease exist because of the fallen state of the world. We however, are not subject to the fallen nature for we have died with Christ and have been made alive in Him. Sin and death no longer rule over us.

Also, there are natural reactions in the body that cause sickness. If I drink in excess, eventually my liver will be ill. If I inject myself with something that my body was not designed to receive, I will be ill. If I fornicate with multiple partners carelessly, I may contract a disease because of those interactions. These are all natural effects of physical behavior. They are not physical consequences of spiritual behavior.

Jesus indeed paid it ALL.
